I didn't know how to act in the room and I determined to remain quiet.  All the others were wearing something blue.  I had never joined this party before, so I didn't know any rule.  A friend of mine came to me and whispered, "Didn't you read the invitation, the paper your girl brought you yesterday.  It said that we must wear the color of the invitation.  It was blue this time."  I turned red with shame and fury.  I had no time to read it well.  In addition, the paper was soaked in rain as if someone had spilled orange juice over it, and the color was washed out: I thought it was in a postbox which remained open, and it was raining hard.  Mary, a girl in my house, always keeps it open.

A tall girl, the organizer, walked in.  She came to my side and looked at me.  She was wearing yellow and brown, no blue was spotted.  

"Sorry I didn't know what I had to wear, but I think you are supposed to wear something blue, too."  I said.

"Well, yes."  She answered and examined me.  After a short and quiet while she continued, "And both of us are already wearing one, Barbie!  Our eyes are blue aren't they?  It is our owner, Mary, who set this rule.  There is nothing to worry about for us toys!"

この部屋でどう過ごすべきかわからず、黙っておくことにした。他の人たちはみんな何かしら青いものを身につけている。このパーティーに参加するのは初めてで、ルールをよく知らなかったのだ。友人がやってきて囁いた。「招待状読まなかったの？侍女が持ってきた紙があったでしょ。招待状の色を身につけてこないといけないの。今回は青だったわよ。」

恥と怒りで私は赤くなった。昨日もらったからよく読んでないし、誰かがオレンジジュースでもこぼしたかのように雨に濡れてて色なんてわからなくなっていた。うちのメアリーはよくポストを開けっぱなしにするし、昨日は大雨だったし。

背の高い主催者の女の子が入ってきて、私に近づいてこちらを見てきた。彼女は黄色と茶色を着ていて、青いものは見当たらない。

「ごめんなさい。何を着てくればいいか知らなかったの。でも、あなたも青を着るべきなんじゃないの？」

「ええ、そうね。」彼女は答えて、私をよくみた。少しの静寂のあと、こう続けた。「私たちはもう青を身に着けているわ、バービー。私たちの目って青いでしょ。このルールを決めたのは持ち主のメアリーよ。私たち人形に心配することなんて何もないわ」
