My father was a carpenter.  Roger was his name, but he had never been called by his name until he became a carpenter and needed to let others know his original name.  Early 1950s, he was born in a small city where his parents had bought a house.  Everyone in those days called him New House: it was so rare to see newly built buildings.  Soon he got used to the name, but he gradually got tired of it.  This is when he decided to become a man who could make houses by himself.  Friends of him were excited because there were going to be more new houses in the small town.  Now, the name Roger has become very famous.  Surprisingly, most of the buildings in this town were made by him.

大工である父、ロジャーという名だが、職に就き、本名を明かさなければならなくなるまで、その名で呼ばれたことは少なかったらしい。今から50年前ほど、父の両親が新築の家を建てたこの小さな村で生まれた父のあだ名は「ニューハウス」。すぐに慣れたものの、それほどまで新築が珍しいという土地柄なのかと、辟易するのも早かった。たまらず、父が選んだ道は、家を建てる職。苦楽を共にした仲間は、村に新築が増えることに大歓喜。気づけばロジャーの名は有名に。にわかには信じ難いが、この村の家のほとんどは、父によって建てられたものだ。
